What is a Limiting Belief and How to Change it?
This week, with my Manifest Your Momentum participants, we talked about Limiting Beliefs and Limiting Stories and how to change them.
It is one of the vital concepts to understand and work on in self-development. It is the combination of the fears, stories, beliefs that are keeping us stuck. So if you want to get unstuck and transform your life, this is where you need to do the work.
What is a limiting belief?
A limiting belief is a negative thought or assumption about yourself, others, or the world that restricts your potential and holds you back from achieving your goals. These beliefs are often rooted in past experiences or societal conditioning and can operate subconsciously.
Examples:
"I’m not good enough to apply for that promotion."
"I’ll never be able to lose weight because it’s genetic."
"Success is only for people with connections."
“Nobody is buying houses in this economy, I can never sell.”
“All the nice guys are taken.”
The limiting beliefs that I worked on in my fertility journey...
Some if them were coming from the experts (doctors who were handling my case), some of them were coming from my fears around entrepreneurship. When things get tough I have a tendency to compare it with my corporate career.
You cant focus on your business with a baby.
Being an entrepreneur is a lack of stability, you can't add the burden of the baby.
Your tests and blood results are clear, you cant change the science.
How can we eliminate them?
I follow a 3 step approach with my private clients (and for myself) to change these beliefs to more positive, supportive thoughts.
Step 1) Acceptance
Acceptance is not a ‘pity party’ or ‘poor me’ syndrome. It is accepting where you are at now so that you can initiate transformation. It helps to hear our inner voice and find out our limiting beliefs or limiting stories.
We do a deep dive on finding those negative beliefs and stories. You would be surprised to hear most of them are coming from our childhood. Most of us are not even aware of the beliefs we hold inside, we usually have a a-ha moment during the sessions when we discover them.
Recognizing and challenging these beliefs is the first step toward personal growth and empowerment.
Step 2) Liberating Yourself From the Past – Letting Go of the limiting beliefs, stories
Once we find the limiting beliefs we use various techniques to let them go. BUT here is something important, letting go does not mean forgetting or acting like past didn’t happen.
Past is past, it happened, there is nothing you can do to change it. What we focus on is to understand the lessons, the strengths you got from it, so you can convert this story for your personal power!
In this step, we do a deep healing work of ourselves related to self-worth, self-love and clear the resistance and past wounds. I also add personal meditations to my private clients as everyone is so unique.
Step 3) Setting foundations for new supporting beliefs
And the final step, rewiring your beliefs. It is the Mindset work! In this stage, we work on supporting our self-worth, owning who we really are and claiming what we really want!
There are so many different tools and teachings that you can use to rewire your beliefs. The ones I like to use are deep healing work combined with mindfulness; personal meditations, affirmations, manifestation techniques and inspired actions.
